Is the Impeachment Inquiry a Coup?

Are the Republicans denying Trump’s wrongdoings and stonewalling the impeachment process out of partisan devotion to the president? Or are Democrats trying to take down the president through a partisan impeachment turned coup?

History will note that in 2019 America saw the culmination of a coup attempt by Democrats, which commenced the day after President Trump shocked the world by winning the 2016 presidential election… the Democrats have attempted to gain support for impeachment with a host of trumped-up charges that end up being exposed as utter nonsense.

No, impeachment is not a coup… the process is handled through elected officials who take an oath to uphold the Constitution and represent the will of their constituents. Those representatives and senators will be held accountable for their decisions in future elections..

…the idea that impeachment “overturns” the previous election. This too is ridiculous. If Trump is removed from office, he’ll be replaced by the Republican vice president he chose and vetted during the presidential campaign. The Trump administration, including his cabinet officials — acting or otherwise — will still exist.

Is Benny Gantz the New Yitzhak Rabin?

Blue and White leader Benny Gantz drew comparisons to Yitzhak Rabin on Saturday at an event in Tel Aviv memorializing Rabin’s assassination. Gantz, who is Netanyahu’s main political rival, has recently been tasked with forming a coalition after Israel’s do-over election. Yitzhak Rabin was known as one of Israel’s greatest voices for peace. Is Benny Gantz his ideological heir?

Peace, peace and more peace: if I’m not mistaken, it is the first time the word “peace” has turned into a welcomed guest at an event headed by the Blue and White leader.

Decent and honest, Rabin and Gantz understood that it is impossible to continue to live only by the sword forever. They certainly would have found a common language between them: The need to do something. But this something was frighteningly unsubstantial and partial for Rabin, exactly the way it is for his heir, Gantz.

In the current political situation, with Gantz’s time to form a government running out, this may end up another election speech and the hope he promised to the Rabin camp will become a campaign speech. (Translated by Jewish Journal)

Should Americans Get Used to “Intimate Photo” Controversies?

The Katie Hill controversy, which involves leaked nude photos and an affair with a staffer, raises questions for a society in which sending intimate photos is increasingly commonplace. What is to be learned from the story? More at NPR.

There will always be vengeful exes and envious allies and ruthless opponents and double-crossing friends. Whether the messages are being carried by pigeons or pixels, you have to protect yourself — and your data… And don’t leave yourself vulnerable by giving people the ammunition — or the nudes — to strip you of your dreams.

OK, millennials?

…it would seem that photos like Hill’s are the norm. And if everyone has nude pictures, shouldn’t it sort of mean that no one does? Hasn’t this sort of scandal become ubiquitous, and thus banal?

There will be other Katie Hills, other women with vengeful ex-partners with blackmail ready to publish, and opportunistic media outlets eager to publish it. When it happens, the story won’t be social media or millennial promiscuity; it’ll be something much older and much more pernicious. Revenge porn is abuse.

Do the Kurds Need Their Own State?

The withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria has brought the world’s attention to the vulnerability of the Kurds, who are one of the largest stateless ethnic groups in the world. Some say that Trump should have a “Balfour moment,” throwing his support behind a Kurdish state the way British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour did for a Jewish state in 1917.

The global system is built around sovereign states, and it shows. This is an enormous problem for groups that define themselves, or are defined by others, as distinct from the country within whose borders they happen to reside, and it’s also terrible as a framework for navigating the global politics of a rapidly changing world.

…while the Kurds in Iraq have sought to separate themselves from Baghdad, the aspiration for statehood is not held by all Kurds, and independence is not always an immediate goal… In Syria, the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) has been explicit that it does not seek an independent state — just regional autonomy within Syrian borders.

…support for a Kurdish state would be met with widespread opposition. With the exception of Israel, every country opposes Kurdish independence. But President Trump’s policies impacting the Jewish State demonstrate a willingness to resist popular opinion and do what’s right in the Middle East.

Should Gender Dysphoric Children Transition?

A custody battle in Texas was made complicated and bitter by the fact that the two parents in question disagreed over their child’s gender identity. The case raised a familiar and deeply controversial question: should children who display gender dysphoria be allowed to transition medically?

Gender affirming parenting can save a child’s life.

Today, my son is almost 30. When we welcomed him into the world nearly three decades ago, we thought he was our daughter, but we were wrong… reaching puberty made Jeremy miserable, because it worsened his gender dysphoria. He knew inside that he was a boy, even though his reproductive anatomy didn’t match.

A 7-year-old boy cannot be transgender. At least, not with anywhere near the certainty necessary to justify taking steps toward life-altering, potentially irreversible physical changes such as hormone therapy or puberty blockers.

This stance — against chemically castrating young children — is now considered radical and abusive, rather than obvious common sense, at the fringes of the transgender movement.

To be honest, I don’t know how we solve this problem. Every child is different and unique. His or her gender dysphoria may be due to sexual orientation or transgender identity, or it could be part of countless comorbid other factors. This has to be a decision based on each case, with parents and therapists involved. Some kids need to be fast-tracked; many don’t. All I know for sure is that too many of these irreversible calls have been wrong ones.

Do Meditation Apps Deliver Enlightenment?

Meditation and mindfulness apps, which promise greater presence and lessened stress, are all the rage. But can the wisdom of mindfulness really be delivered via our smartphones? Buddhist scholars say the benefits of such apps are slim and the risks are great.

… our findings show that Buddhist meditation apps are not a cure that relieves suffering in the world, but more like an opiate that hides the real symptoms of the precarious and stressful state in which many people find themselves today.

While testing the app over two weeks, I find the biggest challenge is finding the time to use it. Frustratingly, as I increase the duration of the meditations, I become increasingly distracted and my mind drifts to all of the other things I should be getting on with. I even stop one meditation short to refresh my Twitter feed.

The mindful revolution isn’t just pushed by institutions looking to mollify our problems. We download apps, we go to retreats, we buy meditation headsets. We actively seek it out not just to fix ourselves but also to improve ourselves. Who doesn’t want to be a better employee, a better lover, and a better person more generally?
