Has Trump’s Rhetoric Crossed a Line?

Trump is being accused of fascism after calling his political enemies “vermin.” More at New York Times.

In any other America on any other timeline, a presidential candidate echoing the words of Adolf Hitler would soon be packing up for an early retirement.

This is a classic mainstream media move… Pick some individual phrase of Donald Trump, focus on literally that word without actually interrogating the substance or what’s at issue.

Trump’s vile outburst coincides with new and shocking reporting on the GOP front-runner’s plans for a second term. The New York Times reported that Trump “is planning an extreme expansion of his first-term crackdown on immigration…”

Will Support for Israel Cost Biden in 2024?

As left-wing opposition to Israel’s war with Hamas grows, support for Biden drops. More at Rolling Stone.

It is unclear, however, whether Democratic voters would be swayed by Gaza given that the alternative might be a second Trump presidency; Republican voters remain supportive of Israel.

Republicans see an opportunity to take advantage of new divisions among elected Democrats, left-wing activists and core Democratic constituencies — but not by making direct appeals to voters who want to see Biden soften his stance.

Many Arab Americans in this swing state of Michigan, who overwhelmingly voted for Biden in 2020, say they are considering sitting out the next presidential election.

Is the Palestinian Authority Prepared to Rule Gaza?

Mahmoud Abbas’ Palestinian Authority, which governs the West Bank, is the most likely candidate to take over the administration of the Gaza Strip after the war. Is it ready?

The PA not only lacks legitimacy with its own people, but it also lacks the will to fulfill its already existing obligations. Indeed, the PA’s unpopularity led to Fatah losing the 2006 elections to Hamas in Gaza.

Among Israel’s professional governing class, the idea of a smooth PA takeover is treated as risible. Blinken spoke of an “effective and revitalized Palestinian Authority.” That might require some serious time at the gym.

There is no other Palestinian or international body that can rely on legitimacy in Gaza and its donor countries, in the West and the Middle East; no other body who can be asked to help rebuild Gaza. For the purpose of governing Gaza, there is no alternative to the Palestinian Authority.

Where’s the Outcry Over Hamas’ Sexual Violence?

The lack of an international outcry over Hamas’ sexual violence against Israelis has many accusing feminist organizations of antisemitism and double standards. More at Fox News.

UN Women, the organization which, following the October 7 attacks, published a number of articles in which the women of Gaza were mentioned, while the plight of Israeli women was ignored.

Where are the self-righteous sisters of The Squad? Where is AOC, Rashida, and Ilhan? I guess their duplicitous feminist stance takes a pause when the victims are Jewish.

The response among the majority of groups committed to ending violence against women and girls (VAWG) was threefold: to keep quiet, to disbelieve the victims, or to insinuate they deserved their fate. In the words of 140 American “prominent feminist scholars”, to stand in solidarity with Israeli women is to give in to “colonial feminism”.

What Are the Implications of Elon Musk’s Antisemitism?

Elon Musk commented in support of a post on X that claimed that Jews stoke “dialectical hatred against whites.” More at Axios.

…just because Musk’s affirmation of white-nationalist ideology was the unsurprising outcome of his online radicalization spiral doesn’t make it any less devastating—or dangerous.

In addition to the risks posed to personal and civic safety by promoting hate speech, Musk’s actions in recent years have raised myriad national security concerns. Musk has weakened guardrails against mis- and disinformation…

American progress was never inevitable. It took immense courage to move haltingly to the more just, more fair country we live in today. We can’t presume that progress is permanent. It never is.

What’s New & Delicious in Jewish Cuisine?

Here are three takes on what’s cooking in the world of Jewish food:

Thanksgiving is just around the corner. To celebrate, here are some delicious dishes to add to your menu.

“I know a whole turkey is traditional for most folks at Thanksgiving, but sometimes it’s just impractical,” Faith Kramer, author of “52 Shabbats: Friday Night Dinners Inspired by a Global Jewish Kitchen,” told the Journal.

About 35 years ago I came up with a line which encouraged me to think I might be able to hack it as a writer. The line was: “I am a Jew by food; I worship at my mother’s fridge.” It wasn’t exactly Shakespeare, but it was tight and funny and most of all, it was true.

At the intersection of Mexico’s vibrant culinary traditions and the history of Jewish immigrants lies an astonishing palette of flavors, ingredients and cooking techniques. The interplay between these culinary worlds has birthed dishes that both challenge and complement our understanding of Mexican and Jewish cuisines, reaching far beyond the typical or stereotypical.
