Was Trump Trying To Intimidate Marie Yovanovitch?

President Trump took to Twitter to blast former U.S. ambassador Marie Yovanovitch during her testimony at the impeachment hearing on Friday. Stating that “Everywhere Marie Yovanovitch went turned bad,” Trump’s vitriol at the witness during her testimony is being called into question as a possible instance of witness intimidation.

The tweet was not directed at Yovanovitch. She was already testifying when it was posted, and mightn’t have known about it if Schiff hadn’t informed her.

As dramatic as it may seem that Trump effectively interrupted a witness’s testimony to attack her as she spoke, this was not his first foray into public witness tampering. It is, in fact, one of his go-to moves…

There is a valid question about whether a boss needs to be more careful than even a remote implication about firing in retaliation, but a fair reading of context suggests this didn’t cross that line.

Is Trump’s Ukraine Scandal More Like the Lewinsky Scandal or Watergate?

Impeachment hearings don’t happen every day. It’s only natural that Americans are trying to get a little perspective on the current impeachment process by looking back at previous impeachment cases. But is Trump’s scandal comparable to Clinton’s or Nixon’s?

Watergate was a political scandal caused by Nixon and his underlings and by no one else, which meant that, when Nixon was gone, so was the “long national nightmare.” That is not our situation today. Trump could decide on a whim to resign tomorrow… But masses of people will still be yearning deliriously to Make America Great Again—yearning, that is, for an authoritarian leader and a violent political culture.

With Clinton, Ken Starr had everyone that matters in front of the grand jury. From the President, to Monica Lewinsky and Linda Tripp to low-level aides, Secret Service and White House valets. He left no stone unturned and when he released his report and subsequently testified before Congress, the case was all there, with no loose ends. The Trump impeachment is nothing like that. President Trump has not gone under oath in the matter of Ukraine.

The Watergate hearings considering the impeachment of President Richard Nixon truly uncovered facts. The House Intelligence Committee hearings chaired by Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., now underway are not fact-finding hearings… the Democrats already know exactly what their witnesses will say in advance of the public hearing. As a result, Democrats have scripted their leading questions to score political points – not to uncover facts.

Is It Antisemitic To Label Products Made In the West Bank?

The European Union has decided to enforce a strict labeling regulation mandating that all imported Israeli products made in the West Bank be labeled as such. Proponents say that this will help consumers make choices in line with their political values. Opponents see an echo of Jewish boycotts in Nazi Germany.

…if there are consumers who choose to boycott settlement products to protest the occupation, that is certainly their right. It’s not the EU’s job to enact policies aimed at pulling the wool over their eyes. It’s quite possible that some, perhaps even many, boycotters are anti-Semitic or hate Israel, but a “Made in Israel” label would serve them just as well as one saying “Made in the West Bank (Israeli settlement).”

The selective and discriminatory EU labeling policy . . . ignores the numerous situations in the world where states administering territories have transferred hundreds and thousands of their own citizens into [those] territories, such as Turkey in Northern Cyprus, Morocco in occupied Western Sahara, Russia in occupied Ukrainian territory, and the like. This is indicative of an acute double standard in EU policies, raising pertinent questions regarding the real motivation behind such policy.

Labeling products from Judea and Samaria will encourage boycotts, something Jews were subjected to in the darkest period of Europe’s history. And by declaring Jewish businesses – the implication being Jewish life – in Judea and Samaria as illegitimate, the EU is acceding to the Palestinian-driven idea that certain spots on the map need to be “Judenrein,” free of Jews.

Who Wants To Drink a Mug Full of “Billionaire Tears?”

Elizabeth Warren doesn’t care that billionaires don’t support her. In fact, she sees this as a badge of honor. Her campaign has even started selling mugs labeled “Billionaire Tears.” Is this a wise move to shore up her progressive credentials? Or a step too far which will alienate people?

…an ill-advised tactic that attempts to win by class warfare, which is precisely what she and other Democrats accuse Donald Trump of doing. The candidate who last year called herself a “capitalist to the bone” has produced a new line of “billionaire tears mugs” to promote her heavily left-leaning agenda.

This is demagoguery 101: Target a specific person or group. Denigrate the mark. Cast yourself as the underdog fighting for justice. With Ms. Warren and Bernie Sanders, the villain is any American who has become wealthy.

Warren’s tax is not only fair–it would be transformative. This wealth tax could pay for universal childcare and universal pre-k, cancel student loan debt, and pay for free universal college educations–and more.

But sure, let’s keep interviewing billionaires about why this hurts their feelings.

Why Didn’t Kaepernick Show Up to His Workout?

After effectively being blackballed for his kneeling protests, it seemed for a moment that quarterback Colin Kaepernick might be coming back to NFL football. The NFL scheduled a workout for Kaepernick to impress scouts from NFL teams, but Kaepernick abruptly changed the venue to allow press and fans to be present. Kaepernick claims he was going for transparency after being dealt with unfairly by the NFL. The NFL is arguing that he’s just trying to create a spectacle.

It’s obvious that neither side trusts the other. While Kaepernick and the NFL settled his collusion grievance in February, there’s no reason to believe that Kaepernick feels differently about the NFL’s intentions towards him than during the 16 months that he pursued his legal case.

The NFL’s decision to organize a private workout for Colin Kaepernick on Saturday in Atlanta is not what it looks like on the surface. Mostly it feels like a guy inviting an old girlfriend to dinner and getting her hopes up at the thought of reconciling when he really has zero interest other than ending the relationship on good terms. He wants her to think he’s a good guy so she tells all her friends that he isn’t the lying and manipulating pig they all know him to be.

…he once again showed up the NFL and turned what should have been a low-profile workout into a cause…Saturday was a great moment for Kaepernick the celebrity and Kaepernick the activist. Maybe it was never meant to be a real moment for Kaepernick the football player, so his ongoing battle with the NFL remains as it ever was.
