An 18-year-old walked into a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, on Saturday armed with a gun. Livestreaming the attack, the suspect fatally shot ten people and wounded three others in what is being called a racially motivated hate-crime against the Black community. More at AP.
He is an adherent of the so-called “great replacement” theory. According to authorities, Gendron felt compelled to drive more than three hours to shoot innocent Black people indiscriminately with a high-powered rifle because white Americans are being “replaced” by people of color.
Racist ideology is an evil in itself. But the American exception that bathes this country in blood and grief again and again and again is not that we are uniquely susceptible to racism or jihadism or veganism. The American exception is the unique ease of access to weapons.
There’s no doubt that a racist subculture exists in America and is spread on social media… But mass shooters have had many motivations in recent years, and mental illness seems to be the most significant common denominator, to the extent there is one.
The suspected gunman in the Buffalo attack—Payton Gendron, of Conklin, New York—wrote a lengthy manifesto before the attack, describing his racist ideology and his belief that Jews are trying to destroy America.
As we mourn the victims of the tragedy in Buffalo, it’s instructive to see in the killer’s so called Manifesto, that his insane hatred of minorities extended to Jews on all sides of the political spectrum.
That’s something to remember, despite the often deep ideological divide.
Since my photo evidently appears in Buffalo shooter’s manifesto, I read it. Same old trash: Sinister Jews use non-white hordes to destroy the white race. Lesson is clear: Even when white nationalists claim to love Jews + Israel they always threaten us too.
The contents of the Buffalo manifesto are nothing new among 4chan-based extremists.
The Buffalo suspect was enraptured with the oldest of white supremacist and Nazi tropes: That Jews were sending in non-white immigrants to replace whites.
Video footage of Israeli police beating mourners at Shireen Abu Akleh’s funeral was widely shared around the world leading to shock and outrage. Police claim that they were merely trying to prevent the coffin from being commandeered by rioters.
Perhaps the funeral would have been derailed by rioters… Israel Police managed to snatch this public relations defeat from the jaws of their victory.
As I have been told by colleagues close to the family, those police had communicated to the family that they did not want a public procession out of fear it would be a public disturbance.
…when it comes to the police, their failure lies in the actions of officers on the ground, their commanders, and their decisions… . There is evidently a problem within the police force.
May 15th is known to Palestinians as Nakba Day. Nakba Day (Nakba means “catastrophe” in Arabic) is a day of national mourning for Palestinians, who view the founding of the state of Israel as their national misfortune.
We must teach our children about our neighbors, seek understanding, and champion peace… This can only be achieved if we learn to understand our neighbors’ grief, not exacerbate our own.
“Nakba Day” does the opposite and should be abolished.
The Palestinians were unable to defeat [Israel], but by fomenting and cultivating a culture of “Nakba,” they don’t just hurt Israel, but mainly themselves.
Recognition of the Nakba and recognition of the Palestinian narrative are not only gestures of human sensitivity toward people who were affected by the war; they are vital to a full understanding of Israel’s complex history.
A nationwide shortage of baby formula has families desperate for a solution and a nation looking for someone to blame. More at CNN.
Babies need to be fed. Full stop. And even if their mothers could breastfeed to begin with (which is not always the case), restarting the process when you have already weaned can take weeks or even months. Babies can’t wait for the nutrition they need.
Some conservatives blame the FDA for causing a scare, but the agency had no choice but to investigate the complaints and warn consumers. The real culprit is government policies that have limited formula options.
It’s true that several pallets of baby formula have reportedly been shipped to the southern border to feed the babies of detained illegal immigrants. But in the grand scheme of a nationwide shortage, that’s really not very much baby formula, hardly enough to make a difference either way.
Here are three takes on great ideas in Jewish education—from the new and innovative to the tried and true.
Birthright has directly affected close to eight hundred thousand participants, nearly 5% of the Jewish people, who are demonstrably more involved in Jewish life than those who did not go on the program. Birthright graduates are now assuming leadership positions in Jewish organizations, hailing their Israel-visit as a formative personal experience.
Recognizing how the shortcomings of the traditional model prevented us from meeting the unique needs of students and families during the pandemic, we approached our return to on-campus learning in 2021 with an eye towards change. Instead of offering only the same weekly religious school experience as in the past, we began to craft tailored experiences to meet the disparate needs and schedules of our families…
Of course, the value the Jewish world puts on education is excellent. I worry, though, that our emphasis on secular studies has outpaced and replaced our commitment to our Jewishness. Yes, Jews are being educated, but we must also ask, are Jews being educated in the fullest, richest way — or is something lacking, particularly when it comes to our education in the Jewish tradition?
