Do DeSantis or Haley Still Have a Chance?

Trump emerged as the clear frontrunner in Iowa with Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley, respectively, in a distant second and third place. Could either one of them still overtake the former president?

… it’s not over. In a country of 332 million, just 110,000 people have voted. Calls from Trump supporters to declare the race done are offensive and premature. Let voters have their say.

I really don’t see a path forward for either of them…. Even if [Haley] wins or makes it close in New Hampshire, she’ll get clobbered in her own state of South Carolina soon… DeSantis had his one chance in Iowa and now he’s in single digits.

…imagining that [Haley] could wrest the nomination from him ignores the fact that, if he were to suffer a humiliating setback in New Hampshire, Mr. Trump would be guaranteed to attack her with a viciousness he has so far reserved primarily for Mr. DeSantis.

What Are the Prospects for Real Peace in Israel?

Can Israelis look forward to a time when the threat of war no longer looms ever present? Or are such hopes more distant than ever?

One might argue, perhaps, that peace would only occur when Arabs stop living under authoritarian regimes, because according to the Democratic Peace Theory, democratic states do not go to war against each other.

The crucial lesson from Northern Ireland and other conflict zones is that national and religious conflicts are resolved through political agreements, not emotional bonding. Stopping violence is a prerequisite to reconciliation – not the other way around.

Unless and until Hamas is eliminated as a military force in Gaza, none of this is possible. Rid Gaza of the cancer of a genocidal terrorist group and maybe, just maybe, the two sides can begin traverse the ocean of agony, pain and suffering that threatens to drown them both.

Are We Entering the Era of the Israeli Center?

After the failure of the peace process, the era of the Israeli left came to an end and the era of the right began. After October 7th, is it time for the era of centrism?

Although the nuance is different in each country, the polarization is felt in almost all Western democracies… In Israel, Left and Right have largely split off into political identities.

The faint hope, then, is that after the Netanyahu era, the structure of the blocs will be broken and a centrist coalition will be formed with the Likud…

Laying out his political ideology, Bennett said, “My opinions are right of center, and I have not changed my opinions, but I have become a huge believer in the need for ‘moderacy’ in the way we govern Israel. I’m a radical moderate.”

Should the October 7th Massacre Sites Be Preserved?

A debate is unfolding in Israel about how best to preserve and commemorate the sites of Hamas’ October 7th atrocities.

…the focus has to be… on ensuring there that is a viable future in Gaza and on Gaza’s borders, not in building a memorial theme park for the massacre of October 7.

We already have a Yad Vashem, and one is quite enough.

Was I performing a brave, responsible deed or was I desecrating these places once again in what might be conceived as being a sort of gruesome “tragedy tourism”?

It is unclear yet where all these objects will find their new home – in one of the homes in the kibbutz that will be dedicated as a memorial site, a museum, or perhaps a virtual museum. Perhaps, viewers will be able to digitally visit these places in a few years and see the destruction that Hamas unleashed on the communities.

Is UNRWA Part of the Problem?

News of employees of UNRWA—the UN Relief Works Agency—celebrating the October 7th attacks has brought renewed attention to the controversial role that the UN agency plays in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

UNRWA oversees a big part of Gaza’s education system, and its teaching curriculum and the behavior of its staff since Oct. 7 have shown that incitement against Jews and Israel is a large part of their activities.

Our new movie will depict how UNRWA mesmerizes youngsters in Bethlehem and Jerusalem to engage in the kind of killing spree that the world witnessed on Oct. 7.

The world needs to know that UNRWA teaches murder.

For the time being, UNRWA has the infrastructure in place to provide the necessary and crucial aid to Gaza during the ongoing fighting and Israel has no interest in changing this currently, according to the report.

What’s New & Fascinating in Jewish Literature?

Here are three page-turning takes on news from the world of Jewish literature:

In “Shining Brightly”, author Howard Brown highlights the power of light to combat darkness.

A two-time stage IV cancer survivor, Brown is a speaker and interfaith peacemaker. He’s also an expert when it comes to resilience.

… after a TikTok highlighted the book’s Zionist themes and Carner’s personal pro-Israel activism, she received a wave of negative ratings and reviews. The incident is just the latest example of the phenomenon of “review-bombing,” or attempts to tank a book’s rating on Goodreads, which has vexed authors as the platform becomes an increasingly important metric of success.

The latest, The Bund: A Graphic History of Jewish Labor History, includes a strong narrative written by his longtime collaborator and graphic artist and illustrator Sharon Rudahl… The book recaptures a largely hidden history of political resistance, the story of Jewish resistance against various forms of oppression and tyranny
