There’s yet another twist in the pandemic: The omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, now has a “subvariant” that seems to spread more quickly than any other version of the coronavirus to date.

White House chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said in an interview this week the U.S. is heading out of the “full-blown pandemic phase” of Covid-19.

Thankfully, the omicron wave is easing, and much of the United States is now on the downward slope. This was the fifth wave of the pandemic, and if we have learned anything, it is that relaxing restrictions should be calibrated to local conditions.
