Is the Panic Over Omicron Warranted?

Authorities are sounding the alarm over the Omicron Variant of Covid-19, but some say that the media and government are overreacting. More at CNN.

Is it possible that omicron is the next big thing? Yes.

But is it probably far more likely that it’s not? Also yes… scientists have a duty not to oversell.

And we are doing exactly that. Shame on us.

It’s not hard to imagine what media critics will say about the early Omicron coverage in a few weeks if the variant turns out not to be as bad as some experts fear. Equally, however, it’s not hard to imagine what media critics would have said if major outlets had initially ignored or downplayed Omicron and it turns out to be really bad.

There is a cottage industry for casting doubt on the pandemic, starting with Trump’s early repeated flu comparisons and assurances that it would just go away — potentially relatively quickly.

What’s the Abortion Debate Really About?

Today, the Supreme Court will hear the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, and abortion rights advocates are worried that the Court will use this case to overturn Roe v. Wade. The abortion debate never fully goes away in America, but what is it really about?

We know from embryology, in other words, not Scripture or philosophy, that abortion kills a unique member of the species Homo sapiens, an act that in almost every other context is forbidden by the law.

…what we can tell you about abortion is that there is absolutely a causal link between abortion access and women’s lives. Period. Whatever one personally thinks about abortion, it is absurd to suggest Roe could be overturned without drastic consequences.

…Roe and Casey have distorted federalism. These cases nationalized and homogenized abortion regulation. Before, for most of U.S. history, the issue played out in the states.

How Did “Eliyah” Hawila Fool Everyone?

He posed as a Jew and married into a tight-knit, Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn. Then it was discovered that he was actually a Lebanese Muslim.

The revelation sparked fears, and an FBI investigation, that the man, Eliyah Hawila, 23, was working for a terror group… But speaking to Israeli media for the first time in an interview broadcast Sunday, Hawila presented his side of the story, claiming that he was motivated by his desire to live a Jewish life…

Hawila, a 23-year-old Lebanese-born Muslim man, met the woman, identified only as “Sally,” on a Jewish dating website, and they recently wed in a lavish ceremony in Brooklyn. But Sally’s father is said to have grown suspicious of Hawila’s story, and turned to the internet.

A picture emerged out of our conversation, as well as from interviews with a number of other people who got to know Hawila in recent years. He is a brainy young man with an unstable home life and a burning discomfort with his origins who found that Judaism was the only thing capable of soothing his bitterness and alienation.

Was Ghislaine Maxwell a Mastermind or a Pawn?

Ghislaine Maxwell is on trial for charges of trafficking underage girls for the late Jeffrey Epstein, who died by suicide in prison in 2019. More at NPR.

[She] did not act in a vacuum. The question remains as to whether the other unnamed rich and powerful people in [her] orbit may have engaged in wrongdoing as well and will be held accountable, too.

She knew Epstein as well as anyone. And, prosecutors say, she befriended some of Epstein’s underage victims and coached them sexually. As the daughter of a British media mogul, she moved as an equal in Epstein’s world.

“Guilt by association”: That is the message the attorneys for Ghislaine Maxwell will try to send to jurors… As the trial progresses, we will have to see whether that strategy works — or whether Maxwell’s day of reckoning is finally upon her.

What’s Jack Dorsey’s Legacy to Twitter?

Jack Dorsey has announced that he is stepping down as CEO of Twitter. Here are three takes on his long tenure as the leader of the social media giant:

Dorsey was in some ways an unconventional leader, and under his guidance, Twitter did things a little differently. While Twitter suffers the same problems around hate speech, extremism, and harassment that every major social media platform faces, it has managed to garner praise from members of the social media research community for offering more transparency

Dorsey’s artistic mindset was cited, pointedly, when he was removed as chief executive for the first time in 2008. According to Nick Bilton’s book Hatching Twitter, Williams said to him: “You can either be a dressmaker or the CEO of Twitter. But you can’t be both.” Dorsey would apparently intersperse his chief executive duties with breaks for hot yoga and sewing classes.

Shareholders, meanwhile, could not be happier. When CNBC announced the 45-year-old’s abdication, Twitter stock spiked by more than 11 percent. Maybe they were relieved to not be faced with any more stories like the time rapper Azealia Banks claimed Dorsey had sent clippings of his Rip Van Winkle-like beard…

Do “Jewish” Hallmark Movies Do Justice to Hanukkah?

Every year, the Hallmark channel churns out countless Christmas movies filled with unlikely loves, pretty princesses, chunky sweaters, and happy endings. Now, they are trying to appeal to Jewish viewers as well with “Eight Gifts of Hanukkah.

Is there room in that well-worn formula for some Hanukkah celebrations? The answer, increasingly, seems to be yes… And at a time when representation on screen is debated more than ever, both main characters in the film are played by Jewish actors.

This is what Hallmark would make if they made a Hanukkah movie. There is an inherent cheesiness to their holiday offerings — upon learning the premise, you know exactly what to expect, and it’s part of the appeal. However, the movie’s unpredictability and fluent dialogue makes it hard to dislike.

The film’s Jewish content is accurate but lacks depth… I’m still waiting for a mainstream Hanukkah movie in the same vein as Netflix’s “Happiest Season,” with more complex characters and higher stakes.
