Is “Bibi-Hatred” Enough to Unite Israel’s New Coalition?

The main thing uniting the diverse members of Israel’s new governing coalition is their desire to oust Bibi Netanyahu from his position as Prime Minister. Is it enough?

Hate is a powerful emotion. When politics is involved, it is a very, very powerful emotion; so powerful, it is almost blinding… It unites people who would never otherwise be united.

In many ways, the unlikely coalition that has come together in Israel to try to unseat Bibi is Israel’s equivalent of Bidenism — a movement of people who believe that society has to repair its torn political fabric…

The compromises are many, and achievement is one: ousting Benjamin Netanyahu. That is the main aim of this government, and if you think this is somewhat petty, you are not alone. Many Israelis, mostly on the right, feel like you. But most Israelis feel that it is worth it—that forming this coalition of rivals to oust Netanyahu was an essential move.

Why Is Kamala Telling Guatemalans Not to Come to America?

In her first trip abroad as VP, Kamala Harris spoke to Guatemalans urging them not to migrate to the United States, promising that the US will further invest in measures that will increase quality of life and decrease danger in Guatemala.

The Biden administration would do well to take a closer look at why so many Guatemalans are leaving and determine what it would take for them to stay

…the US spent decades contributing to regime change and destabilization in Latin America. We can’t help set someone’s house on fire and then blame them for fleeing

One of Ms. Harris’s goals is to drum up investment for the region. Manage your expectations. Count on lots of glad-handing with politicians, activists from non-governmental organizations, and slippery businessmen who know a thing or two about political entrepreneurship.

Should CA’s Assault Weapon Ban Be Overturned?

A federal judge has ruled that California’s ban on assault weapons violates the second amendment. Gun control advocates are worried about the effect this will have on the state.

If the case is appealed to the supreme court, the court’s new conservative majority could use the legal battle to rule that banning military-style “assault weapons” is unconstitutional, undermining the Biden administration’s endorsement of a national ban.

It’s hard not to see the sharp increase in production and sales of assault-style weapons in the years after the Heller decision as an effort by 2nd Amendment hardliners to try to get the deadly weapons into more hands to make the spurious argument that they are now in common use. It’s galling that a federal court would buy into that reasoning, which is what Benitez has done here.

Gun bans are unconstitutional. Big win for the Second Amendment this week.

What Do We Think of Bezos in Space?

Controversial Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos is headed to space, and people have a lot to say about it:

…the billionaires are dreaming big. The billionaires want to colonize the moon. The billionaires want to colonize Mars. The billionaires seem to be a little bit afraid of Earth, because they’re spending their billions trying to escape into a lifeless, airless, empty, inhospitable black vacuum.

… there’s a sense of personal competition, too: Both Musk and Branson have indicated they want to make it to space, too. Now Bezos is on track to beat them both by climbing aboard his own ship and showcasing his confidence that this new era of civilian space travel can work.

Of course, it’s not too late for Bezos to do better — and stepping away from Amazon (as well as the planet) might give him some new perspective — literally — on what he can do on Earth with his wealth and new-found time.

Should Chrissy Tiegen Be “Canceled?”

In the wake of revelations that she “cyber-bullied” TV personality Courtney Stodden, celebrity and model Chrissy Teigen is losing sponsors and leaving her role on Mindy Kaling’s series, “Never Have I Ever.”

What Teigen said on Twitter about and to those people was genuinely horrible, and it is clear that she targeted them because pop culture had given her permission to do so. Even outlets like Jezebel, “a supposedly feminist website,” were mocking Stodden in 2012. Doing so was part of the snarky ethos that defined Jezebel and its more famous cousin, Gawker.

There’s a difference between slagging off someone’s outfit and inciting them to kill themself. That Chrissy was ten years older than 16 year-old Courtney makes it difficult to excuse Chrissy on the grounds of immaturity: she was a 25 year-old adult bullying a child.

It’s only a matter of time before another celebrity is the subject of the public jury. It’s time we change our approach. Silencing people won’t make them change. Getting them in a dialogue might.

What’s New in Jewish Thought?

Check out these three great takes on new ideas from Jewish thinkers:

The question I have most frequently asked and been asked over the last 20 years consists of three words: “Is yoga kosher?” My answer has always been an enthusiastic “yes!”—but context is important. Many Jewish sources suggest that the practice of yoga is permissible, although as with all Talmudic thinking it can also be argued the other way.

I hope my fellow millennials will welcome in new possibilities of faith and community in the same way they welcome other new experiences. I’m sure they will gain much more than they ever could have imagined in the process.

Without Judaism, however, Zionism is limited to its existence as a state; without Zionism, Judaism is a religion like many others in nation-states throughout the world. Although valid and important identity markers, they miss two essential ingredients: revelation and redemption.
