Will Trump Really Run in 2024?

Trump still hasn’t conceded the 2020 election, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have his sights set on 2024. Will he really run again in 2024? Furthermore, would he have a good chance of winning? More at Newsweek.

President Trump’s recent actions should show he is not seriously contemplating another presidential run in 2024. Not even he could be so delusional as to imagine this recent flurry of destructive behavior helps him retain plausibility as a future presidential contender.

Trump’s 2020 loss should in theory lead to a power vacuum in the Republican ranks… A look at the data reveals, however, that Trump is in a uniquely strong position to maintain his control over the party. Until proven otherwise, Trump should be considered the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican nomination for president.

Republicans can continue to embrace Trump’s policies while getting behind someone without his baggage. Who might that be? My view of the perfect candidate is Vice President Mike Pence, who has been loyal to the president without the name-calling…

Should “Medical Freedom” Concerns Be Taken Seriously?

Anti-vaxxers are criticized as conspiracy theorists who refuse to act for the common good. The anti-vaxxers themselves, however, say that they’re merely concerned about “medical freedom,” the ability to make one’s own medical choices for oneself.

As with voting, the only way our nation can succeed in moving on from this pandemic is if we all do our part… it is not just a privilege to receive this vaccine first. It feels like a patriotic gesture and my responsibility as a member of the American community. And just like with voting, this patriotic duty will not come without effort.

The destruction this virus has wrought on America has revealed the deeply interconnected nature that is our society. It is this interconnectedness which must serve as the foundation to adopt a more collective understanding of ourselves and our society and, ultimately, a less simplistic notion of what freedom means.

The current communication strategy—built on listening to advice from trusted leaders—is paternalistic and outdated… A better approach to persuasion is to assume you’re speaking to mature, self-interested decision makers, offer transparent and comprehensive information about the risks and benefits of the vaccine, and engage patients in the decision-making process.

Can Biden’s Climate Team Make Meaningful Change?

The global climate emergency is one of the most serious issues facing President-elect Biden as he comes into office. What do his appointees—John Kerry, who was instrumental in the Paris Agreement; environmental health expert Gina McCarthy; and Jennifer Granholm— indicate about his climate policy. More at Salon.

The Biden team is as different as different can be. For starters, it actually cares about climate… Mr. Biden’s strategy is still in the making. But whatever path he chooses, progress in this still-fractured country will require all the energy and smart ideas his team can muster and all the negotiating skills Mr. Biden himself has acquired in a half-century of public service.

The incoming Biden administration presents a new era in the fight against climate change. His team isn’t just faced with the challenge of undoing the damage to our environment caused by the Trump administration over the past four years — but it must also meet the rapidly worsening climate crisis with bold, historic climate action.

Joe Biden has unveiled what he called his climate cabinet appointees, and progressives are calling it an “all star” list. That depends on your point of view. One of the stars is former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm to lead the Department of Energy, and the choice suggests a return to climate corporate subsidies… during her governorship from 2003 to 2011, Ms. Granholm handed out hundreds of millions of dollars to politically favored startups to create “green jobs.” Many of her bets failed.

How Can Netanyahu Be So Beloved and So Reviled?

As Israel nears a fourth election in which the main issue is Benjamin Netanyahu himself, it’s worth taking a moment consider what his legacy will be. Netanyahu has overseen a period of unrivaled financial, diplomatic, and security success for Israel. He has also overseen a period of division, pettiness, and scandal. How can one man have such a wildly uneven legacy?

He is our most talented leader and our most destructive politician, bringing unprecedented normalization agreements with four Arab countries and scorched earth in our governance… In the past, when his behavior was merely arrogant, with a vague whiff of corruption, the tradeoff seemed worth it. But in the last few years he has violated our most sacred norms, erased all moral restraint from our politics.

As far as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s most ardent supporters are concerned, those preparing his political obituary are again wasting their time. If there is one thing we have learned in the last two years, it is that Netanyahu is something of a political magician who is at his best when cornered. The question now is whether the struggle to stay on top is going to obscure the historic nature of all that he’s accomplished.

It is the highest mark of statesmanship to recognize when one has reached the pinnacle of political life, and that to cling to illusions will inevitably lead to an ignominious end.
So, Prime Minister, take the opportunity of the forthcoming election to retire from political life so that you will be remembered by future generations as not only the longest–serving, but also arguably the most successful prime minister in Israel’s history.

Did Mimi Groves Get What She Deserved?

The New York Times ran a story (below) about a teenager, Mimi Groves, whose classmate, Jimmy Galligan, led a successful campaign to have her barred from her college of choice for having uttered a racial slur in a TikTok video when she was 16.

For his role, Mr. Galligan said he had no regrets. “If I never posted that video, nothing would have ever happened,” he said. And because the internet never forgets, the clip will always be available to watch.

“I’m going to remind myself, you started something,” he said with satisfaction. “You taught someone a lesson.”

That’s what “social justice” advocates do — tear people down in order to feel morally superior. It’s sick. In the story, Groves is exceedingly embarrassed and apologetic for the video she sent on Snapchat. But what she did in private was not even nearly as offensive as what Galligan did to her in public.

What I gathered from this piece is that no one involved is interested in taking responsibility for or weighing the consequences of their actions. Not Jimmy Galligan; not Mimi Groves; not the schools in question: No one.

What’s the Controversy Over Hilaria Baldwin’s Accent?

Instagram influencer Hilaria Baldwin (wife of Alec Baldwin) has found herself at the center of a controversy about her name, accent, and ethnicity. Has the 36-year-old yoga instructor been faking a Spanish heritage and accent for her whole career? More at People.

So much self-loathing. So many people thinking that adopting another identity will make them more interesting… But her grift is pretty freaking great, proving what we all know about the evils of social media: The more people shove an ostensible truth down your throat, the more likely it’s a total lie.

The curious thing about Hilaria’s public mentions of Spain and being Spanish is that most of them seem to include very well-known Spanish touchstones, like a Westworld version of Spain where everyone just eats paella, listens to flamenco, and loves the Spanish flag. As some of Hilaria’s critics have pointed out, she used this claim of Spanish heritage for personal gain.

…while Baldwin’s parents do live in Mallorca today, she was brought up in Massachusetts, with evidence that she attended high school at the Cambridge School of Weston quickly surfacing and various former classmates going on the record to Page Six describing her as “fully a white girl from Cambridge”—known at the time simply as Hillary—who had no trace of the Spanish accent that she seems to have acquired at points over the past decade.
