Are Targeted Killings an Effective Strategy?

According to new reports, Israel’s July strike on Hamas second-in-command Mohammad Deif was successful. This revelation comes a day after news of Israel’s killing of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and the killing of Hezbollah senior commander Fuad Shukr.

Supporters of Israel and moral people everywhere should celebrate the demise of mass killers like Shukr and Haniyeh. They should do so not only because it is justice but because anything that leads to total victory over terrorists is a step towards peace, not more problems for Israel.

Haniyeh was a marginal figure in essence, mainly symbolic. His physical disappearance will have no significant impact on Hamas’s status, its political or military capabilities, or on the organization’s internal or all-Palestinian politics.

Those who worry about the fate of a ceasefire deal should be encouraged by Haniyeh’s date with destiny. There are different ways to protect Jewish life, and Israel takes each opportunity when it presents itself.

What Will Iran’s Response Look Like?

Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has ordered a direct strike on Israel in response to the killing of Haniyeh in Tehran. Here are three takes on what that response might look like:

Iran could well be planning for an assassination as “an eye for an eye,” but such an attack would take time to prepare.

I think a major escalation can likely be avoided. Iran has few obvious ways of responding proportionally to this attack, and it is well aware that a broader conflagration will put Iran itself at unacceptable risk.

Both assassinations were calculated gambles, and now we must hope and pray that they end in the result Israel hopes for. In the meantime, the home front must prepare for the barrage of missiles that will come and hope our enemies are deterred and our allies stand by us. Good luck to us all.

Is the Israeli Home Front Ready for a Regional War?

If Iran’s response to Israel leads to a broader regional war, what would that mean for Israelis? Is the country ready?

…at certain moments, the siren is a relief, a moment of clarity. When the siren wails, the future is clear. Put on a shirt, carefully descend the stairs, make sure your daughter is awake, get into the shelter, look around to see the whole family is there – dog included. Close the door.

…the Home Front Command has not issued updated public guidelines or imposed restrictions, allowing normal civilian activities to continue, including at the borders, Ben Gurion Airport and central Israel.

A school without proper protection can quickly become a death trap, and we must not allow any school to open without meeting the stringent standards of the IDF Home Front Command.

After 300 Days, What’s Israel’s Biggest Priority?

Today is the 300th day of the war. After this long span of time, is defeating Hamas Israel’s biggest priority or bringing back the hostages?

…while progress has been made on targeted killings of top terrorist organization leaders 300 days into the war, efforts to come to a deal to free the hostages from captivity in Gaza have been far more stagnant.

There isn’t a soul in Israel who doesn’t yearn for the hostages’ safe return, just as there’s no one who doesn’t want to see Hamas decisively defeated. Navigating between these two imperatives is a true “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” scenario. Whatever course the government chooses will be legitimate, provided we don’t blind ourselves to the costs.

…the way to obtain the release of the 115 hostages that Hamas has held in the Gaza Strip for 300 days – only about half of whom are still alive – is through a deal. This is also the position of the army and of senior defense officials.

Is America Ready for a Jewish Vice President?

Will Kamala pick Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro to join her on the ticket, or would a Jewish Zionist be too much of a liability?

It has become hard to escape the conclusion that some of the activists imposing this inquisition have a problem not just with Israel or Zionism but with Jews, who they assume are serving a foreign power, no matter what they’ve actually said or done.

It is probably true that some number of left-wing people who care a great deal about the Middle East and currently plan to vote for Harris might abstain if she nominated Shapiro. I think that number is extremely tiny.

Shapiro has, moreover, done far more than most Democrats to attack pro-Palestine antiwar demonstrators, in ways that call into question his basic commitment to First Amendment rights.

What’s New & Delicious in Jewish Cuisine?

Here are three takes on what’s cooking in the world of Jewish food:

Food has always been the main focus of Jamie Schler’s life. That bond has only strengthened over time. A Jewish American writer, specializing in food and culture, Schler has lived in France for decades.

One of the chef’s goals at The View is to blur the lines between kosher and nonkosher dining. And therein lies the secret of the menu. While the focus is the meat dishes, the chef wants his kosher diners to enjoy the flavors available at nonkosher restaurants.

The central goals of this new app are reducing food waste and combating the high cost of living. Its subscribers pay a low price for leftover food that restaurants couldn’t sell and would otherwise discard.
