Who Did Trump Just Fire? Why Did He Fire Them? Who Will He Fire Next?

The “You’re Fired!” president surprised no one this weekend when he fired FBI Director Andrew McCabe two days ahead of McCabe’s retirement. With Tillerson freshly fired from the State Department, and Trump’s sights set on national security adviser H.R. McMaster, it seems that no advisor or cabinet member has a sense of job security. More at CNBC.

He is using his deep experience on “The Apprentice” to jettison some high-profile administration officials who are rubbing him the wrong way. Trump seems eager to orchestrate a purge — he said this week that there “will always be change.”

… Trump is in the process of creating a dangerous echo chamber. His inner circle will be filled with people who sound just like him or who are willing to carry out whatever he says.

Inside the administration, some officials have grown convinced that the president and his staff can no longer be relied on to defend top officials from controversy and, indeed, will actively work to worsen a cabinet secretary’s troubles if it means insulating the president from any blame.

Trump and his associates are a focus of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 election, and McCabe’s firing could send the message to federal law-enforcement officials that they risk their jobs and reputations if they displease the president…

McCabe is also reportedly a witness in Mueller’s investigation, which is additionally examining whether the president sought to obstruct justice when he fired former FBI Director James Comey last May. McCabe cited his involvement in the inquiry in a statement released to the press on Friday.

How Should Israel Deter and Respond to Acts of Terror?

Israel has seen several worrisome acts of terror in the past months, including a number of fatal attacks on Israeli citizens in the West Bank. The most recent of these was a car-ramming attack in the West Bank on Friday which left two soldiers dead and two others wounded. Israel must now figure out the answer to two questions: how to deter and how to respond.

A lawmaker from the Yisrael Beytenu party on Saturday vowed that in the coming months his party would ensure the Knesset passes legislation to allow the death penalty for convicted Palestinian terrorists.

A day after a Palestinian man killed two Israeli soldiers and seriously injured two others in a West Bank terror attack, MK Oded Forer told a cultural gathering in the southern city of Beersheba that the measure would serve as a deterrent for future attackers.

Over the past six months, the IDF has exposed and neutralized three border-crossing terror tunnels in Israeli territory—two in the Kissufim and Ein HaShlosha area and another under the Kerem Shalom border crossing, which also branched out into Egypt. The tunnels were uncovered thanks to new technology to detect underground activity.

IDF Spokesman Brig.-Gen. Ronen Manelis called the incident “serious” and said security forces were also investigating whether an anti-tank missile was fired at troops who were an estimated 100 meters away from the explosions.

“We will act decisively against any attempt to turn the [area near] the fence into a hideout for terrorist activities, and we will not allow the demonstrations [by Palestinian protesters near the fence] to turn into terrorist activities,” said Manelis.

Why Isn’t Putin Afraid of Theresa May?

The standoff between the West and Russia isn’t dampening Putin’s chances for success in the upcoming Russian election. In fact, it may end up working to his advantage. One thing is clear – Putin doesn’t seem to be afraid of either losing the election or upsetting Theresa May. Why not? More at Bloomberg.

The British were shocked — or should I say “shocked, shocked” — to discover that Russian operatives treat all of Britain like Londongrad… the Russian government treats Britain with disdain because the Russian government thinks it has bought the British elite. Worse than that, it may be right.

Russia has been on the receiving end of sanctions and diplomatic slights ever since Crimea was annexed in March 2014, and Putin will expect to ride out whatever punishments the British can put together in the same way that he has ridden out those of the past. He will talk up the resilience of the Russian state and identify appropriate forms of retaliation that his adversaries will find difficult to match.

May’s other big victory this week was to galvanize the support of the US, France, and Germany.

If one of Putin’s aims was to test how isolated Britain is following Brexit, then this joint statement suggests that the UK is far from marooned. Putin’s seeds of division have not taken root, and it is Russia that looks increasingly adrift in a week of strained diplomatic tensions.

What are the Maddest Moments from March Madness?

March Madness is upon us with America’s Division 1 collegiate basketball teams squaring off. It’s still unclear who will make it to the final four, but here are the highlights of March Madness so far:

They played loose and fearless, simply because they had nothing to lose. A No. 16 seed had never beaten a No. 1 seed in the N.C.A.A. men’s basketball tournament. Who would ever think that the tiny University of Maryland-Baltimore County would be the ones to break through?

That was some kind of nightcap to end the third day of the NCAA tournament.

Michigan’s Jordan Poole, a freshman, knocked down a 25-footer as a time expired in Wichita, Kan., to stun Houston, 64-63, and earn a trip to the Sweet 16.

Weeks after the Wolverines swept through the Big Ten Conference tournament, Michigan’s run is still going, and its win early Sunday morning capped an unforgettable day of college basketball.

A Kentucky-Arizona match-up, between two teams that started the season in the top five, was enticing and, for a day anyway, it looked like chaos had taken a loss at the NCAA tournament. Not so fast, said Buffalo and its oddly-named mascot and its shooters. This is the tournament.

Chaos always wins in March.

It’s sustained chaos, the kind that Arizona fought through and succumbed to this season, that’s harder to overcome.

Was Facebook user data used for election meddling?

Can a “woke” James Bond still be James Bond?

Is it Facebook’s job to decide Israel’s borders?

Facebook said that a Russian-American psychology professor at the University of Cambridge named Dr. Aleksandr Kogan had obtained user data through a personality app he built in 2014 called “thisisyourdigitallife,” which scraped data from the profiles of people who took the quiz as well as that of their friends [and then] funneled the data to Cambridge Analytica, which had funded the development of the app to the tune of $800,000. Kogan had also received funding from the Russian government…

I’m looking forward to the seduction scene where Bond and his amour discuss the issue of consent, sign forms, stating clearly which sexual activities are permissible, and then discard their matching hipster dungarees to make wild, passionate, mutually respectful love.

I’m not mocking #MeToo; I’m mocking the idea of a woke Bond. Bond isn’t just a character any more: he’s a construct, verging on a subculture, a spy-themed homage to the vanishing world of “man’s man” wish fulfilment, where tuxedo-clad heroes womanise and shoot people, and female characters primarily exist to look sexy and impressed, albeit in a “fierce”, “challenging” kind of way.

Puzzled by Facebook’s decision to define Israel’s borders, Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Tzipi Hotovely, wrote to the company demanding an explanation. “It’s inconceivable that Facebook takes neighborhoods in eastern Jerusalem off the map,” she wrote. “We cannot consent to a situation in which a commercial corporation determines the borders of the state of Israel.”

Facebook was quick to reply, apologize, and correct the mistake. Still, according to the Israeli newspaper Yisrael Ha’Yom, Facebook still refuses to place ads targeting Israelis living in Judea, Samaria, or the Golan Heights.
